A video, purportedly taken from the popular quiz programme Kaun Banega Crorepati's special episode, showing host Amitabh Bachchan with comedian Samay Raina has gone viral on social media.
What does it show?: In the video, Raina asks Bachchan if he could make a joke, to which the latter agrees.
Raina goes on to say, "What do you and a circle have in common? Neither of you have a Rekha."
The joke plays on a double entendre, likening a rekha (line) in Hindi to veteran Bollywood actor Rekha.
How did we find out the truth?: We watched the full episode, referred to as the 'Influencer Special' on SonyLIV, where KBC is available for streaming.
Raina, who played the game with comedian and content creator Tanmay Bhat, cracked several jokes related to Bachchan's films, the show itself, and his own childhood in the episode, which aired on 31 January 2025.
However, we did not find any mention of the actor Rekha throughout the episode.
We also went through SonyLIV and SET India's YouTube channels to see whether this clip was uploaded separately, but neither of the channels carried the viral clip.
Noticing a 'brain.rot.indian' watermark on some of the claims, we looked up this username across social media platforms.
The search led us to an Instagram page with the same name, which had shared this clip on 2 February, amassing over two crore views at the time writing this report.
It was shared with an 'AI info' tag, which when tapped, said that the account had added an AI label to their post.
This indicates that the video had been retouched or altered using artificial intelligence.
The post's caption also carried the hashtag 'ai'.
Since we did not find any evidence of the clip being authentic, we ran it through Hive Moderation's AI detection tool, while also submitting it to Bengaluru-based startup Contrails.ai's tool.
Hive Moderation's analysis showed 99 percent confidence in the video being AI-generated and 94 percent confidence about the audio being created using AI.
Similarly, Contrails.ai's report also mentioned that both, the audio and video, were "fake."
"Both audio and video have clear signs of AI manipulation detected with high confidence," it noted, adding that Raina's voice had been matched using voice cloning or conversion techniques.
For the video element, the report said that their tool predicted "clear AI manipulation," and that "lipsync techniques are used to impose cloned voice on the lips in the frames."
Conclusion: A deepfake of Samay Raina making a joke in front of Amitabh Bachchan on KBC has gone viral as a real video.
